This is one of those photobooks that gained enormous popularity at the time of its publication, yet is little known today.
The book opens with a text by French author André Maurois, followed by Dutch photographer Nico Jesse’ s black and white photographs structured into the following chapters: Students, Artists and models, Fashion and its acolytes, The women of the market, Saint-Germain-des-Prés, The concierges of Paris, Paris Ballerina, The Comédie-Francaise, Working Women. Jesse’ s book is a love declaration to the women of Paris.  The use of flash makes his images visually wander between Weegee and the tradition of legendary street/reportage photographers like Willy Ronis or Robert Doisneau. This is one of the classic Paris books.
